You may have noticed I photograph a lot of English Bulldogs and a few French Bulldogs as well. For those who have not read my previous blogs, or newsletters, I used to have a pet sitting business. One of my first clients was a family with a English Bulldog named Daisy Loo. When I first met Daisy Loo, I knew very little about English Bulldogs. Since then, I have met, photographed and scratched the tummies of probably a hundred, or more, English Bulldogs. I have learned that they are incredibly affectionate and good family dogs that are great with children. I have also learned they are much more athletic than their reputation suggests.
After taking care of Daisy Loo for a couple of years I met her breeder, Kym Thew, of Bullyful Bulldogs and began to photograph Kym’s dogs. Kym later asked me if I would like to be the official photographer for the St. Paul-Minneapolis Bulldog Club’s Specialty Show, in 2018, and I accepted. Having never photographed a dog show I was really nervous. There is definitely a learning curve but everyone was very helpful. It was such a fun experience, I decided to return as the photographer for the 2019 show feeling much more confident. Unfortunately like many things this year’s (2020) show was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
According the American Kennel Club (2017), the Bulldog was recognized by the AKC, in 1886, and the dog’s general appearance and attitude should suggest great stability, vigor and strength. The AKC’s description continues by stating “Bulldogs are mellow and happy to relax next to their owner’s feet, but they also enjoy an occasional romp and going on walks”.
Taking care of Daisy Loo, when I owned my pet sitting business, was a wonderful experience. I have always owned Rat Terriers (and one Pomeranian) but my experience with English Bulldogs, over the past few years, has made me a true lover of the breed.
Pictured below are some candid, and “win” shots, from St. Paul-Minneapolis Bulldog Club’s Specialty Show in 2018 and 2019.
